MacaroniKID publishers often take the opportunity to connect with local organizations and businesses to gain insight on the resources that are available to families and fun activities in the community. One such organization I've had the pleasure of working closely with through various community events is Kiwanis Club of Opelousas.
If you're unfamiliar with Kiwanis, it is a global organization with numerous local chapters comprised of compassionate individuals who share an interest in making a difference in children's lives. One particular club that stands out in this division is Opelousas Kiwanis Club.
Kiwanians are motivated by their compassion to help others in their community. They volunteer their time and support other local non-profit organizations. They show up at community events. They lead community toy drives and assist with feeding the community for those in need. There is so much good that comes from the work they do and the love they pour out into their community. Opelousas Kiwanis Club has generously sponsored MacaroniKID Acadia-St. Landry to support our previous projects and I have been graciously accepted as a member of the Opelousas Kiwanis Club.
One of the key projects of Kiwanis clubs is their Kiwanis Kids program, which aims to help encourage academic growth and success in children. What's particularly unique about the program, however, is that it doesn't simply reward students who have the best grades. Kiwanis Kids identifies and rewards students that have shown improvement focusing on character development, self-esteem, enhancing conduct, building positive peer relationships, improving attendance, and improvement in schoolwork.
Selected students from participating schools are recognized each 9-week period and rewarded with gift certificates from local businesses and entered into a drawing for a brand new bicycle!
Organizations like these promote positive movements in their community. They host fun events for local families like the Annual Softball Tournament. Their involvement in community activities help support many of the local fun that you can find on our Events Calendar.
Kiwanis Club of Opelousas also aims to help support those they serve in the community. This Christmas season they sponsored local children to make Christmas happen for families experiencing homelessness. They have also assisted in Feed the Community events to hand out meals for those in need.
