Kool Kid: How One 9-Year-Old Girl Is Bringing Comfort to Children

Learn how this KOOL Kid's mission is making a lasting impact

By Courtney Jennings, Publisher Acadia-St. Landry June 4, 2026

It's been a little while since we've shined a light on a KOOL Kid in the community but this story captured my attention!

MacaroniKID Acadia-St. Landry aims to bring out the best in our communities from the local events, attractions and many resources available to families. From time to time we meet people that make long-lasting impacts to serve, improve, and inspire their communities for positive change.

Meet Lila

Lila is a 9-year old girl and the daughter of a law enforcement officer. A few years ago she learned that someone had given her father a bag of stuffed animals to keep in his patrol unit for children during difficult situations and the idea stayed with her.

Moved by the idea, she repeatedly asked her parents if they could bring more stuffed animals to local police stations so that other first responders would have them available when needed. After a year of persistence her parents agreed to let her create a Facebook video asking the community to donate gently used stuffed animals.

"Her mission: to deliver more stuffed animals to first responders, bringing comfort to children during difficult and frightening situations."

Her goal was to wash, organize, and package the stuffed animals into boxes for first responders to distribute to children in need.

Lila's Patrol Pals Donation Drop Off

What happened next exceeded everyone's expectations! What started off as a simple community service project quickly grew into a movement.

In just a matter of weeks, Lila delivered more than 200 boxes of stuffed animals, with many more still waiting to be packed and distributed. Community members rallied behind her mission, donating stuffed animals and volunteering their time to help sort, clean, and package them.

Local businesses, schools, churches, and community organizations also stepped forward to support the effort, demonstrating the incredible things that can happen when a community unites around a shared purpose. With the support of the community she recently delivered 39 boxes of stuffed animals to several departments in the Acadiana area, including Crowley, Carencro, and Lafayette.Lila's Patrol Pals stuffed animals for patrol units Crowley Police Department MackidAcadia Kool Kid

But the impact of Lila's project extends far beyond the stuffed animals themselves.

These donations provide comfort and emotional support to children during some of the most frightening moments of their lives. A simple stuffed animal can help calm fears, ease anxiety, and offer a sense of security when everything else feels uncertain.

This project is also fostering positive interactions between children and first responders. When a police officer, firefighter, EMT, or other emergency responder offers a child a stuffed animal during a difficult situation, it can transform a scary experience into one that includes compassion, care, and connection.

These moments matter. They help build trust between young people and the first responders who serve their communities. They remind children that the people who show up during emergencies are there not only to protect them but also to care about their well-being.

Lila's story is also a powerful demonstration of how children can be agents of change. Her determination, compassion, and willingness to take action in her community make her one Kool Kid!

Stories like these remind us of the importance of encouraging children to pursue their ideas, serve others, and believe that their actions matter. When we support young people in their efforts to help others, we empower the next generation of compassionate leaders.
